The price dropped after you booked. What now?

What your options actually are once the booking is confirmed — and when acting on a lower price is worth the trouble.

A lower price after booking is not a lost cause and it is not automatically free money either. It comes down to one question: what does your existing reservation cost you to leave? On a free-cancellation rate the answer is usually nothing, and rebooking is simply worth doing.

On a non-refundable rate the maths changes completely. The saving has to beat what you forfeit, and it very often does not. Many hotels will still move on it if you ask directly — a polite message to the property is free and works more often than people expect.

What you should not do is cancel first and rebook second. Release the room only once the cheaper booking is confirmed in writing, or you can end up with neither.
