What frequent flyers asked this week: lounges, tight connections and travel warnings

Every week we read along in one of the largest frequent-flyer communities online. Hotels rarely come up there, but many of the questions end at a hotel. Here is what travelers asked most this week, with short answers.

1. “My business class ticket didn’t get me into the lounge.”

Premium cabin does not always mean lounge access. Short domestic first class, especially in the US, often comes without it, and some lounges only admit you a few hours before departure. The lounge page of the airline that operates your flight has the rules.

2. “Is a one-hour connection enough?”

It can be, if it is a legal minimum connection on one ticket: if you miss it, the airline rebooks you. On separate tickets you carry the risk yourself. If the next flight is the next day, check who pays for the night before you book anything.

3. “There is a travel warning for my stopover. Fly or cancel?”

An advisory alone rarely gives you a free cancellation; an airline travel waiver does. Check the airline’s alerts page and your government’s official advice, and keep hotel bookings flexible while the route is unclear. More in our FAQ under travel questions.

4. “My connection was cancelled and I face a 14-hour wait.”

On flights covered by EU Regulation 261/2004, the airline owes you meals and refreshments during the wait, and a hotel plus the transfer if you have to stay overnight. Ask at the transfer desk first; if you book yourself, keep every receipt.

5. “I was downgraded. What do I get back?”

Under EU Regulation 261/2004, 30, 50 or 75 percent of the price of that flight, depending on distance. In the US, a downgrade counts as a significant change: if you don’t accept it, you can ask for a refund.

The hotel angle

In three of these five questions, plans changed after booking. A hotel rate with free cancellation turns that into a small task instead of a lost night, and Hotel-Tracker.com tells you if the same room gets cheaper in the meantime.
